Colts named potential trade suitor for former Pro Bowl running back

The Indianapolis Colts have some issues that need to be cleared up after the narrow 29-27 loss against the Houston Texans in Week 1.

Most notably, the Colts have some major concerns in regard to the run defense and the secondary, both of which were gashed by C.J. Stroud to open the season.

While those are the biggest needs for the Colts after the first week of the season, one NFL analyst suggests the front office make an addition to a position that is of little concern.

In listing the biggest weaknesses for every team going into Week 2 — and what to do about them — Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report urged the Colts to go after Carolina Panthers running back Miles Sanders in a proposed trade.

"Jonathan Taylor might be set for a return to dominance in 2024, but the Colts' depth after him is a little shaky. Trey Sermon has not lived up to the hype, and Tyler Goodson has only shown flashes of being a dangerous runner in the league," Ballentine wrote. "Miles Sanders is not set to be a long-term part of the Panthers' plans and has a history with Shane Steichen going back to his Eagles days. A reunion might benefit all parties involved."

Fans might not have even noticed who the backup running back for the Colts was in Week 1, and it's not hard to blame them. Taylor played all but two offensive snaps during the season-opening loss with Sermon filling in the gap.

Adding to the backfield isn't the biggest priority for the Colts. While they can't run Taylor into the ground if they want him healthy for the entire season, they also need to focus on shoring up other spots on the roster.

With that said, Sanders was a Pro Bowl selection in 2022 under Steichen with the Philadelphia Eagles . This season, he's behind Chuba Hubbard and, eventually, Jonathon Brooks when the rookie returns from the PUP list.
