As the greater New Orleans area braces itself for the strengthening and eventual impact of Tropical Storm Francine, many in the region will be relying on generators to keep the power going in their homes. While some Louisiana residents are well-versed on the ins and outs of using a portable generator, many may be first-time users. Paul Lagrange , host of the Home Improvement Show on WWL, urges anyone using a generator near their home to closely read the instructions, have working carbon monoxide sensors inside the home, and keep the generator well away from the home or any enclosed space.

LaGrange stresses that generator safety is important not just for you and your loved ones, but for your surrounding neighbors as well.
Carbon monoxide could affect everyone in the general area, which is why adhering to the specifications of your generator and using it as it is rated is so important. He adds that some Louisiana residents have tried to modify the exhaust system of their generators in order to keep them closer to the home, and stresses that this is not recommended. Any modifications could pose a potential risk, and homeowners are urged not to freestyle when it comes to carbon monoxide and exhaust fumes.

While you may have misplaced original directions for your generator, Lagrange points out that you should be able to go online with the model number to the manufacturer’s website to find proper instructions for most generator models. Louisiana residents should also be sure to change the oil in their generators once every 16-24 hours and be sure to let the engine cool before changing the oil to prevent any potential hazards.
