Bengals should be warned by Peyton Manning's animated moment during Week 1 'ManningCast'

The Cincinnati Bengals were unable to extend wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase this offseason, isolating Chase as one of the lone elite receivers in the NFL without a long-term contract. Brandon Aiyuk nearly joined him before the San Francisco 49ers finalized a four-year, $120 million extension with him right after training camp concluded.

Aiyuk, like Chase, missed out on all of camp because of his contract dispute, and Peyton Manning's feelings on the matter came out in full force during the 49ers' Monday Night Football victory over the New York Jets.

Late in the second quarter, Aiyuk dropped a would-be touchdown pass in the end zone. Manning took the moment as an opportunity to make a statement during the ManningCast .

"Get signed. Get in training camp. There's a reason for training camp, you need it. We need the reps," Manning exclaimed. "Get those contracts done earlier so we can get in training camp and we don't drop balls on opening night."

Manning clearly took issue with Aiyuk missing out on valuable training camp reps and attributed his absence to his inability to make a play a high-level receiver should make.

Aiyuk was entering the last year of his rookie contract and opted to miss all of camp. Chase, on the other hand, has two years left on his deal and declined to practice. If Chase made this decision this year, there's no reason why he won't do so again next year if a deal hasn't been reached by late July.

The Bengals should want to avoid that from being a possibility.

Chase missing out on back-to-back training camps would not be ideal. He returned to practice right before the Bengals' season-opener and was targeted just six times on Sunday. Suffering from food poisoning on Saturday certainly didn't help with that.

Missing practice was bad enough, but the distraction it became to the team and, in all likelihood, for Chase was also an avoidable negative. Having his future secured would've made for a cleaner ramp up for the entire offense.

Both sides are needed to contribute in order for a deal to be made, and according to Chase, Cincinnati wanted to start talks first . A report surfaced that Chase's camp moved slowly and frustrated the front office . That won't be an excuse next year when his marker will be set at the start of the offseason.

The Bengals just went through this once with Chase, and the 49ers showed what it can look like if they go down this path again. Manning's words should act like a warning.
