If you’ve been captivated by the story of Tonka, the former star of movies like Buddy and Babe: Pig in the City , in the HBO docu-series Chimp Crazy , you’re not alone. Fans have been anxiously following the series, eager to learn what fate awaited Tonka. The final episode, which aired on Sunday, Sept. 8, finally delivered the answers we’ve all been waiting for.

Watching Chimp Crazy on #hbo? See where he is now — Here’s my story on Tonka the week he was rescued from a horrible basement cage! @Save the Chimps #florida #animalrescue #animalrights #wpbf25news

The video was posted to the TikTok account @ Terriparkerinvestigates and shows Tonka living a life of freedom after being held in a basement for so long. Tonka is now at Save the Chimps , his sanctuary home in Fort Pierce, Fla.

People are loving this in the comments, and one person said, "omg he's in grass and outside. I'm so glad he's safe." Another person added, "I hope Tonka has a great life after everything he’s been through."

According to the Save The Chimps website," Tonka’s current family consists of 17 chimps, including his newest friends Ursula, Angie the 2nd, Andrea the 2nd, Lil’ Mini, and September. With the freedom to choose between being inside or outside on his 3-acre island home, Tonka is making up for his years in a cage by soaking up the Florida sunshine, playing and relaxing with his family, and painting – one of his favorite enrichment activities."

If you've been watching the series, you know that Tonka was in the custody of Tonia Haddix, a former nurse turned exotic animal enthusiast.

Haddix kept Tonka locked in cages in her basement and then in the spring of 2022, PETA led the chimp's removal from her custody and then he was transferred to Save the Chimps.

Of course many things transpired between Haddix getting Tonka before he was saved, but I wanted to keep those details sketchy for those of you who haven't binged the series yet.

It's such an amazing, fascinating and infuriating series, and it's just amazing that people still keep these wild animals as pets.

Tonka has reunited with His Son

People Magazine reports that Tonka reconnected with his son Cayleb in 2022.

Like his father, the younger chimp was bred for the entertainment industry as an infant.

Dan Mathews, director of events & special projects for Save the Chimps, told PEOPLE that Cayleb was discarded when he became too strong to control. While the two primates were left at separate facilities, the organization rescued both through different cases.

Here's hoping shows like Chimp Crazy discourage others from wanting to own a wild animal.
