Tom Brady entered the Fox broadcast booth with unfair expectations, and he left the booth with critics unfairly declaring him a bust.

The reviews are in after Brady’s debut as the lead NFL analyst for Fox and they’re not great . But none may be worse than the review from WFAN afternoon radio host Evan Roberts.

“I think it’s completely unfair to rank him after just a game,” Roberts told co-host Tiki Barber before he went ahead and ranked Brady after just a game. “I did it after a quarter. And I think he’s awful. I think he’s an embarrassment to the profession. I think he’s that bad. He’s terrible.”

Embarrassment to the profession is a bit harsh. Brady was not great in his debut, but it’s not like he bent over and mooned America the first time Fox showed him in their booth. He was professional, he clearly put in the work and cares about the job, but it just didn’t translate during his debut.

Barber, who calls games for CBS alongside Jason McCourty and play-by-play voice Andrew Catalon admitted he didn’t hear Brady’s debut for Fox, but he questioned how the former quarterback can do the job with the restrictions being placed on him. The NFL prohibited Brady from entering team facilities or participating in production meetings with players and coaches because of his pending minority ownership bid with the Las Vegas Raiders.

“I don’t know how he does this without talking to anybody,” Barber said while noting the importance of those production meetings . “You get a feel of who these guys are and what’s important. What’s the culture? You feel that when you go and you have conversations with guys and he’s been in locker rooms for so long, he’d know…You just know, you feel it. and he can’t get any of that.”

While the inability to participate in those meetings certainly didn’t help Brady, it didn’t seem like the seven-time Super Bowl champion lacked information during his first broadcast. If anything, it Brady sounded overprepared. Brady seemed out of his comfort and sounded nervous, there were times where he would begin a thought and pause before completing it. He even looked stiff when entering the business. Was he great? No. Was he an embarrassment to the profession? Definitely not.

“Listening to him, and I’ll try to be fair, maybe he’ll be better in four or five weeks,” Roberts continued. “He says obvious things, he also has a weird voice. I hate to pick on weird voices…but I don’t know, it was very tough to listen to.”
