Detroit Lions Mailbag: Why did James Houston not play against the Rams?

It's Week 2 and it's time for another Detroit Lions mailbag. We've got a lot of good questions today. Let's just jump right into them.

There were a lot of reasons to believe that James Houston wasn't going to make the Lions 53-man roster. The Lions were really on the fence with him after the final preseason game and after they had finally given up on a three year plan to make him a SAM linebacker, but he made it.

Going into the season I think they saw him as a backup plan if needed. He's completely healthy as far as we know, the Lions just chose to sit him. After they got such good play from the rest of the edge guys on Sunday night, that's probably something they'll continue to do. We'll see how the season goes on, but this has some similar vibes to a player the Lions wound up cutting last year.

Al turnovers are automatically reviewed. Had he thrown the red flag we would have gotten a repeat of what happened to Jim Schwartz on Thanksgiving in 2012.

The officials just didn't see enough to overturn the call. It sucks when that happens, but it is what it is.

It's Week 1 at the end of the day and the Rams are a really good team. The Lions went in there without DJ Reader and were starting a rookie cornerback and a secondary that was playing their first game together. They held that team to 20 points. That's pretty good.

They've earned a little leeway if you ask me. If they're struggling like this in December, then we have some real things to worry about. My guess is they have a better Week 2.

It's really hard to say that a practice squad receiver could come up and do some big things, but if there were anyone worth getting a look at, it's Tim Patrick. He has the size and athleticism you want at the X receiver spot. At least he did in 2021. Now the team has to find out of it's still there.

If it is, this team got a major steal. If it's not, then it was cheap question to answer.

It made sense that the Lions didn't do it in Week 1 since Patrick was still so new to the playbook. I would be shocked if they didn't try it this week with Patrick or even Allen Robison. Maybe even both if you want to get crazy.

The thing I'm really watching is that open roster spot and what the Lions may try to do with this season. I think they're either going to always have one spot open or they're waiting to see which receiver can filled it.

I'm going to go with a baseball analogy on this one. You can bunt, get a double or swing for the fences. Here's three guys that fit that.

Bunt: Robert Woods: If the Lions want to just try something on the cheap end, then pairing Woods back up with Goff could be that move. This is essentially the Lions trying to recapture what they did with Goff and Josh Reynolds.

Get a double: Treylon Burks: Really thought the Lions should have made this move during the offseason. The Titans kept him, but they barely used in Week 1. This guy needs a change of scenery really badly in his career and this could be the best spot for him.

Swing for the fences: Davante Adams: Here's your classic team looking to win a Super Bowl and going all in move. Adams has to be hating live in Las Vegas. We saw that in the Netflix Receiver documentary. Then we saw how bad the Raiders were in Week 1. He might be asking for a trade before you know it. The Lions would be a great spot for him, but it would cost a pretty penny. Luckily the Lions are one of the only teams that can really afford to do it.
