SMU Names Kevin Jennings Starting QB In Week 2

Just three games into the 2024 season, change is coming to the SMU Mustangs: Kevin Jennings will be the new starting quarterback over Preston Stone. So far, the Mustangs are 2-1 on the season. SMU opened the year with Preston Stone as its starting quarterback. Coach Rhett Lashlee had indicated that he wanted to use both quarterbacks and indeed that proved the case.

Jennings and Stone rotated in through the first few games of the season as they tried to find their rhythm on offense. Despite Stone having the experience and decent outings in the past, it has been decided that Jennings shall take the reins moving forward.

Kevin Jennings' Rise

So far, Kevin Jennings has been promising since he arrived at SMU. In his maiden season, he led the Mustangs to an AAC Championship Game win a year ago. The win against North Texas was monumental for SMU since it had its first conference championship since the 1980s. This came with a 26-14 win over Tulane, securing Jennings as a worthy leader of the team.

Benching Preston Stone is the surprise. One of the top recruits and a local favorite out of Dallas, Stone was highly touted. His season as a starter proved the hype; he threw for over 3,000 yards and 28 touchdowns. His return from a leg injury combined with inconsistent play from the SMU offense led to the decision to try Jennings as the starter.

Jennings has been solid in his limited appearances. He's completed 60.1% of his passes for 1,165 yards, with seven touchdowns and three interceptions. His ability to run the ball adds another dimension to SMU's offense. Jennings' rushing stats show he can contribute on the ground as well, averaging 4.3 yards per carry.

Reasons for the Change

One reason for the switch at quarterback may have been because of how beleaguered the SMU offensive line has been. Stone was constantly under pressure and sacked three times against BYU. Whereas Jennings has been more effective under pressure, showing more mobility and athleticism, which could be a big factor in making him the starter.

Jennings brings so much more than a passing ability. His athleticism brings the aspect of being able to extend plays and make plays with his legs, adding a dimension of mobility. He has rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown in his appearances this season, showing his dual-threat capability. That added dimension could be crucial as the Mustangs face tougher opponents.

Looking Ahead

That maiden start this season will be in the Battle for the Iron Skillet against rival TCU. The game will mean a lot in terms of rivalry, with great importance also placed on the momentum for SMU. Challenging games against Florida State and No. 19 Louisville are looming. How Jennings performs in those games could be substantial to the success of SMU.

Lashlee has shown confidence in Jennings. His leadership is unquestioned, and he was named a team captain despite being a backup and went to ACC Media Days to represent SMU. Experience and leadership will be key to his new role.

All in all, naming Kevin Jennings the starting quarterback of SMU ranks is quite the move. His performance and leadership created such an opportunity to present himself as a starter, and that ability to add a running threat may benefit the Mustangs. As SMU is facing a challenging schedule, much will be required from Jennings' end for consistent performances that help the team win.
