The Song Dave Grohl Wrote About His Favorite Beatles Member

Every fan has their favorite Beatle. With four distinct personalities and skillsets, it’s hard to not pick sides. Even their fellow musicians play favorites. Dave Grohl’s favorite Beatle might not be who you’d expect. While the obvious choice is his fellow drummer, Ringo Starr, his actual favorite Beatle is George Harrison. Grohl loved his musicality so much that he wrote a song in honor of Harrison. Find out which song that is, below.

“I loved every single one of them for different reasons,” Grohl once said of his love of the Beatles. “But I connected to George Harrison’s sense of melody more than anyone. The guitar solo in the song ‘Something’ is the first guitar solo I ever learned. It’s such a beautiful solo. Melodically, it’s safe to say that it’s one of the most classic guitar solos of all time. Such a beautiful song.”

Grohl took his love of “Something” and turned it into his own musical pursuit: “Oh, George.” The song appears on the Foo Fighters’ first, self-titled album. Grohl wrote the music to match Harrison’s playing on that Beatles classic.

Though Harrison’s playing is deeply distinctive and hard to replicate, Grohl did a pretty good job at capturing his spirit. “Oh, George” is a worthy ode to a rock icon from another rock icon. Revisit the track, below.

Though you wouldn’t immediately trace the Foos’ music back to the Beatles, Grohl has talked about how the band–specifically Harrison–has inspired him.

“All of those years spent in my bedroom practicing alone to Beatles records, sleeping in cold, infested squats on winter fan tours across Europe, battering my drums until my hands literally bled… it all paid off,” Grohl once said.
