One game into the season, the Indianapolis Colts have suffered a crippling blow to their defense.

Cornerback JuJu Brents, one of the Colts starting cornerbacks, will most likely miss the remainder of the regular season with a knee injury, as first reported by Ian Rapoport.

Mike Chappell of CBS4 and FOX59 did report that there is a chance Brents returns later in the season.

Even if Brents does return, which seems unlikely, make no mistake that this is a huge loss for the Colts defense. They were already woefully thin in the secondary and did nothing to address that in the offseason. Now with Brents out, those concerns are only going to be amplified, and if the defense struggles, so too will the fans’ frustrations with general manager Chris Ballard and defensive coordinator Gus Bradley.

During the Tuesday edition of The Ride With JMV, Bob Kravitz of bobkravitz.com joined the show and made it clear just how big of a blow this is for the Colts.

“This is devastating for the Colts because, and we talked about this and talked about this in the preseason, they’ve got no depth. They have got no depth, they refused to go out and strengthen their secondary in the offseason, and it just makes Gus Bradley’s job even more fraught…He’s got a team with a bunch of guys making a ton of money who can’t stop the run, and now he’s lost probably his best cornerback, which is damning with faint praise, but I think he was the best guy they had out their potentially.”

Bob also gave his take on the Colts insistence on having continuity, instead of trying to add outside pieces.

“If you’re the San Francisco 49ers, or the Buffalo Bills, or the Kansas City [Chiefs], I’m all for continuity because you’ve won. You’ve won significant stuff! This team hasn’t won anything, and they continue to go down the same path.”
