Yankees made woeful history in unprecedented offensive performance

The New York Yankees found themselves on the wrong side of franchise history Tuesday night.

Getting completely blanked by Kansas City Royals starter Seth Lugo during a 5-0 loss in The Bronx , the Yankees had no answer.

In fact, they had very little at all against Lugo, who is in the middle of a career year.

The Yankees mustered just three hits all night, all of which came against Lugo while he struck out 10 batters across seven innings. Gleyber Torres had two singles, and Austin Wells added a single. No one drew a walk.

The Yankees managed just three hard-hit balls (EV 95 mph+) all night from Wells, Juan Soto and Giancarlo Stanton.

Relievers Kris Bubic and John Schreiber combined to strike out two batters each over the next two innings

It was the first time Yankees history that a lineup produced no extra-base hits, no walks and at least 14 strikeouts, according to Katie Sharp .

Baseball has always had it's ebbs and flows, but this was something unprecedented for the Yankees.

According to Stathead , it's happened twice this season to the Tampa Bay Rays (June 8) and the Houston Astros (May 29). It was the 55th occurrence in Major League Baseball history.

The loss, combined with a Baltimore Orioles win Tuesday night, brought the Yankees' division lead back to 0.5 games.

At 83-62 entering Wednesday, the Yankees are tied for the best record in the American League as they wrap up the series against the Royals looking to avoid another repeat of his historically poor performance.

Lugo was outstanding. He has been tough all year. The bullpen did a great job as well. Go Royals!
