Kylian Mbappe is settling into life at Real Madrid but a new claim has been made that he agreed a sensational move to Liverpool from Paris Saint-Germain.

Mbappé's future has been the source of much speculation for the past few years amid links to the Reds but he appeared to always favor a switch to the Bernabeu. The France captain completed a free transfer to Real this summer after letting his PSG contract run down.

The 25-year-old signed a huge deal with the European champions and has enjoyed a decent start to life in Spain, scoring three times in his first five appearances for the club.

  • Mbappe spent seven years with PSG but looked as though he could be on is way out in the summer of 2022. And according to L'Equipe , he agreed terms on a shock transfer to Anfield.

It is claimed he felt 'betrayed' by a series of broken promises from PSG after signing a new deal, and sought a move with Liverpool and Real Madrid both keen. The report goes on to suggest that Liverpool bid a staggering $220m for his services but the French champions were looking for double and that made a transfer impossible.

It is not the first time links have emerged. Mbappe met with Liverpool when he was at Monaco in 2017 and then held talks before signing a new deal with PSG two years ago. "We talked a little bit, but not too much," he told The Daily Telegraph .

"I talked to Liverpool because it's the favorite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool. I don't know why, you will have to ask her. It's a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It's a big club."

Links re-emerged in 2023 when it became apparent Mbappe would be leaving PSG but boss Jürgen Klopp admitted he would be surprised if a deal could be agreed. "We laugh about it," Klopp told Sky Germany in August.

"I can say that I think he's a really good player but the financial conditions don't suit us at all. I wouldn't like to ruin the story now... but as far as I know, there's nothing to it. It's possible that someone else from the club is preparing something and wants to surprise me... that hasn't happened in the eight years that I've been here. That would be the first time."

A version of this story was first published on May 10. It has since been updated.
