Yankees named a top landing spot for projected $175 million superstar

The New York Yankees have a big offseason awaiting them, and they should be one of the most active teams in free agency.

While the Juan Soto sweepstakes will rightfully dominate the headlines and the focus of the Yankees this offseason, there are other areas that need attention.

Most notably, the Yankees most likely need to upgrade the third base position. With Gleyber Torres potentially (and likely) to sign elsewhere, the Yankees can move Jazz Chisholm to second base — his more natural position.

Re-signing Soto is by far the main objective, but they've also been linked to another superstar set to hit the market.

In naming the top landing spots for Houston Astros star third baseman Alex Bregman, Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report has the Yankees sitting at No. 2 only behind the Seattle Mariners.

Rymer projects Bregman to receive a seven-year, $175 million contract in free agency, though he admits his own personal projection is for $210 million across the same time frame.

"Granted, there is history that needs acknowledging here. Bregman was on the 2017 Astros team that was revealed to have cheated in beating, among other teams, the Yankees en route to winning the World Series. Aaron Judge was none too pleased about that," Rymer wrote. "Yet if the Yankees do go after Bregman, that alone would indicate there's no organizational grudge against him. It would merely reinforce their dedication to winning, which could be especially strong if their championship drought extends to 15 years."

It's not the first time the Yankees have been linked to Bregman as a top landing spot.

No one would blame the Yankees for still holding a grudge about the 2017 scandal. But at some point, it needs to be left in the past so that they can focus on the future.

Bregman may not be the player he once was, but he's still a fantastic target at third base. Despite a slow start, he has a .829 OPS, 15 home runs and a 136 wRC+ since June 1.

Whether the Yankees are willing to pay Soto a historic contract and Bregman this projected deal remains to be seen, but The Bronx Bombers continue to be linked to the star third baseman.
