UTSA coach Jeff Traylor built his reputation as a tough-as-nails high school coach at Gilmer and was an energetic force as the special teams coach at Texas.

But Traylor himself sounded like he needed a pick-me-up early this week after a 49-10 loss to Texas State. Things don’t get any easier for the Roadrunners (1-1) this week. UTSA must head north to face the No. 2 Texas Longhorns (2-0) on Saturday at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

During an interview on 1300 The Zone, Traylor talked about his team’s youth and a program in transition after losing multiple transfers off a team that went 9-4 last season.

“You’re not always going to have the best team or the most experienced team,” Traylor said on The Zone. “So you're going to get your teeth kicked in a few times before you get it all fixed. And you know, I've chosen to stay at UTSA, and we’ve been here five years now. And our team has had a lot of turnover this last year.

“So, rebuild is too much of a word, but transition would be the way I would describe it. And this is part of the territory when you’re transitioning, trying to get some younger kids grown up.”

The Roadrunners are breaking in a new quarterback, left tackle, center and right tackle.

“I do have some older heads on defense that I think can get their stuff fixed,” Traylor said. “I think offense is going to take a little bit of time for us to get this thing worked out.”
