The Los Angeles Dodgers faced a tough loss against the Chicago Cubs, falling 6-3 in a game marred by defensive errors. Despite strong performances from Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who made a successful return from the injured list, and power-hitting contributions from Tommy Edman and Max Muncy, the Dodgers' defense let them down at critical moments.

The trouble began early in the game when Freddie Freeman mishandled a ball in the second inning, allowing the Cubs to score first. The Dodgers' defensive struggles continued, culminating in a disastrous fifth inning that saw the Cubs score five runs.

Manager Dave Roberts pointed out several pivotal mistakes that shifted the game's momentum. A pick-off at first base and a series of misplays, including a wide throw from Austin Barnes and a fielding error by Kiké Hernández, contributed to the Dodgers' downfall.

“There’s a lot of things that happened tonight that led to us not winning a baseball game,” manager Dave Roberts said. “(Andy Pages) getting picked off at first base, I think changed the momentum. Not being able to make a play, Austin threw the ball wide.

“The play for Kiké was kind of a bang-bang tweener but turned into an erorr, the ball that got by Muncy somehow, that turned into more runs. It was just very uncharacteristic and led to a lot of pitches for Evan (Phillips). It was just a different team that I didn’t really recognize in that eighth inning.

“For seven innings I thought we played fantastic baseball and had the pitching lined up. The four-pitch walk to (Ian) Happ to start the inning from Alex (Vesia) was uncharacteristic. These are things that just can’t happen.”

Barnes took responsibility for his missed play, acknowledging that it was a critical moment in the game. The team's inability to execute simple plays led to additional runs for the Cubs, further compounding the Dodgers' issues.

Despite the loss, the Dodgers remain in a strong position, with their magic number to clinch the National League West title still at 13 with 17 games left in the season. The team will need to regroup and focus on eliminating mental mistakes as they move forward.
