Cowboys' Winningest Coach - Mike McCarthy - Poised to Tie Jimmy Johnson

    By Richie Whitt,

With the first two Super Bowls, eternal class and his trademark Fedora, Tom Landry is the iconic image of the franchise. Jimmy Johnson went 7-1 in the playoffs and built a roster that won three titles. Bill Parcells is a legendary Hall of Famer.

None of them, however, is the winningest coach in Dallas Cowboys history.

That's right, no one has a better winning percentage for the Cowboys than the lame-duck coach without a contract past this season.

“I really don’t want to speak on it," he said last week about his contract status. "I can’t stand up in front of a group of men and consistently, on a daily basis, demand they focus their time and energy on winning, then I’m up here talking about things that have nothing to do with winning.”

Neither the lack of job security nor void of playoff success has kept McCarthy from churning out the regular-season wins. The Cowboys won 12 games the last three seasons and are off to a 1-0 start after last Sunday's blowout of the Browns in Cleveland.

In his fifth season in Dallas, McCarthy is 43-25 for a winning percentage of .632. That's higher than Barry Switzer (.625), Tom Landry and Wade Phillips (both .607). Johnson won only 55 percent of games in Dallas, while Parcells is the second-losingest coach in franchise history with a win percentage of only .531. Dave Campo is the lone Cowboys' coach to have a losing percentage (.313).

McCarthy can tie Johnson for third place with his 44th Cowboys win Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. Only Landry (250) and Jason Garrett (85) have more victories.

Only 1-3 in the playoffs, McCarthy can't lay claim to being the best coach in Cowboys history. But there's no denying his squads have won a higher percentage of games than any other man to lead America's Team.
