Colby Hall Calls Out Pro-Trump Media’s Attacks on ABC Debate Moderators: ‘Only the Losers Complain About the Refs’

Mediaite’s Colby Hall discussed the aftermath of the ABC News presidential debate on NewsNation on Wednesday, including criticism of the debate moderators by supporters of former President Donald Trump.

While Hall said that there was room to reasonably critique the moderators —ABC News’s David Muir and Linsey Davis— handled Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris and their responses (or lack thereof), he also pointed out that it was always telling when one side is “blaming the refs” for their performance:

I will say this — I coached flag football and I would tell my kids all the time that the people, the players that complain about the refs are the losers. Right? The winners of the game never complain about the refs. So, I think the complaining about the moderators reveals how the candidates’ surrogates felt about the debate itself.

Trump and several right-wing figures complained about the moderators, saying that the debate was “three against one,” with Muir and Davis playing for Harris.

Hall defended the moderators from the attacks, noting the scale of Trump’s fact-checked comments.

“What Trump said on a few occasions was just absurd, you know, provably false,” Hall said. “Things like his claim that babies are being killed after they are born. That’s not abortion, that’s murder, and it’s illegal. Or this sort of debunked story that cats are being eaten by Haitian immigrants. I mean, those are provably false.”

He also noted that where the moderators may have “put their thumbs on th scale” in favor of Harris is allowing her to pivot in her answers to prepared talking points and not pushing back, where, in many instances, they repeatedly challenged Trump to respond to the question asked of him. They did not do that to the Vice President.
