Christian Pulisic is looking forward to new manager Mauricio Pochettino instilling significant changes in the USMNT, beginning with the team's winning mentality.

Pochettino has been appointed as the new head coach of U.S. men's national team just as the Stars and Stripes commenced their international friendly against New Zealand.

The ex-Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea manager is entrusted with reviving the USMNT from its recent downturn and steering them into a victorious stride before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

This decision follows two months after Gregg Berhalter was dismissed from his position. The 51-year-old's turbulent period at the helm of the USMNT concluded with an unexpected group stage departure at the 2024 Copa America.

Berhalter's inability to harness the potential of what is considered the most skilled USMNT roster in recent times is well-known, and he departed without notable victories. His term is likely to be remembered more for his defeats, including losses to Panama and Uruguay earlier this summer.

However, Pochettino's arrival, a seasoned coach with experience in three of Europe's top five leagues, signals a shift in culture that has the USMNT captain Christian Pulisic feeling optimistic.

"Hopefully [Pochettino brings] a culture that is willing to fight, that is willing to take risks, win," Pulisic said after a disappointing 1–1 draw with New Zealand. "There's a lot of things that need to change—the mentality and the culture of the group."

"I think we have the quality, but I know hopefully that's the first thing he's going to want to change," Pulisic finished.

Pulisic's remarks follow the USMNT's inability to secure a win in their last four games. Given that the majority of the starting lineup, including the captain, are accruing substantial playing time at European clubs, the USMNT is expected to achieve favorable outcomes against lesser teams like New Zealand.

The onus is now squarely on Pochettino to guide the United States team back to a winning trajectory and to foster a culture that expects the utmost excellence from its leading players.
