Student Has Car Won In Kicking Competition Taken Away On Technicality

A student who won a car in a field goal kicking competition had it taken away by the sponsoring dealership over a technicality.

Zachary Spangler won the 'Kicks for Cash' competition during the Purdue Boilermakers ' season opener against Indiana State by successfully kicking 20-, 30-, and 40-yard field goals. Spangler won a two-year lease on a car, however, the sponsoring dealership, Rohrman Automotive revoked his prize after it claimed he kicked the 40-yard field goal five one-hundredths of a second later than the time limit after reviewing video footage, Spangler told Purdue's student newspaper, The Exponent , last week.

Trey Rohrman , the director of operations for Bob Rohrman Honda, notified Spangler that he wouldn't be receiving the two-year lease in an email, which included four different angles showing him kicking with a timer at the bottom of the screen.

The clip showed the holder placing the ball down with about 1.5 seconds remaining and Spangler connecting with his kick after the clock passed zero.

"I have a car here that runs just fine," Spangler told The Exponent . "I'm just more upset about how I hit the 40-yarder and they're saying I didn't because it came off my foot five-hundredths of a second late."
