Set to begin its 50th season on September 28, Saturday Night Live has gone through many cast members during its 49 years on the air. Some like Darrell Hammond and Cecily Strong stayed on the show for over 10 seasons before announcing their departure; others like Martin Short and Janeane Garofalo stayed for a single season before moving on; and others were let go by the showrunners. There's no guarantee that a cast member from one season will return for the next unless both the comedian and the showrunners agree to it.

As Season 50 starts, however, fans are surprised that Chloe Troast, who joined the cast at the start of Season 49 last year, will not be returning for this one. Though she charmed viewers with her great comedic timing and singing talents, it appears those were not enough to secure her a second season on the show. Both Troast and her fans were upset by the news and have publicly expressed their disappointment. Let's dive into Troast's brief time on SNL that's coming to an end.

    Who Chloe Troast Is

Hailing from Ho-Ho-Kus, a town in northeastern New Jersey, Chloe Troast went to college at New York University and currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating, Troast began performing in comedy shows in New York City, including hosting Cherry at the Public Hotel and performing the character Pepper Slit, a "'living relic of the Broadway stage and silver screen,'" at various venues like The Slipper Room. In July 2023, she also performed as one of the New Faces of Comedy at the Just For Laughs festival in Montreal.

Chloe Troast's One Season on SNL

Chloe Troast joined the cast of Saturday Night Live at the start of the show's 49th season, which premiered on October 14, 2023; she was the only new comedian added to the show's roster that year. During her time on the show, Troast won the admiration of fans through her combination of comedic timing and excellent singing that many people felt helped carry her sketches. One particular sketch that highlighted her skills as a performer was "Little Orphan Cassidy," where Troast played a young girl who looks out her window and sings to the moon played by that episode's host, Timothée Chalamet.

When the show announced its new and returning cast members for the 50th season, however, Troast learned that she hadn't been invited to come back. In an Instagram post on September 9, Troast expressed disappointment at the news, saying that she wished she would be returning to a show that "'felt like home'" and where she made so many amazing friends. She also thanked fans of SNL and her other comedy shows for supporting her and hoped she spread joy, laughter, and love during her brief time on the show. Though wistful that a return to SNL wasn't in the cards for her, she concluded with a positive note: "'Onward and upwards.'"

    Fan Reactions To The News

Fans of Chloe Troast and Saturday Night Live were less charitable to the showrunners' decision to not bring her back for another season. In the comments on her Instagram post announcing the news, one fan said that SNL would regret letting her go and would rue the day they made the decision. Over on X, fans also heavily criticized the decision to let go of a multitalented player in the vein of Cecily Strong whose musical and comedic skills could make her the backbone the show "'desperately needs.'"

Instagram and X users also praised Troast for her talent and skills. In particular, they stated that the sketches she starred in were some of their favorites and that she had many standout moments last season. They also hoped and predicted that Troast would join a long list of SNL performers with short tenures (e.g., Robert Downey, Jr. and Laurie Metcalf) who achieved great success elsewhere. One Instagram user suggested she should star in movies or her own show on Netflix.

    Final Thoughts

Throughout its nearly 50 years on TV, Saturday Night Live has rotated between cast members every season for a number of different reasons. It's rare for the show to keep the exact same cast between seasons due to older cast members retiring or being let go and new cast members being brought in to fill out the roster. Despite how common casting changes are, it's still upsetting when a talented cast member is let go from the cast, especially after only being on one season.

During her one season, Chloe Troast made fans laugh and smile with her comedic talents and singing skills that elevated many of the sketches she appeared in on the show. While both Troast and her many fans wish that she could've continued developing and showing off her comedic talents in the show's 50th season, the end of her time on SNL might signal the beginning of new opportunities even as it closes the chapter on her current one. She joins a long list of cast members who only lasted one season on the show, and perhaps like many of them, she'll go on to find greater success in comedy elsewhere. We'll certainly wish her the best in her future endeavors.
