As the world mourns on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks , we remember how these tragic events forever altered the course of modern history.

The horrific day claimed 2,977 lives and resulted in over 25,000 injuries, along with substantial long-term health problems. Over the years, numerous stories involving celebrities have emerged, including the heartbreaking news that Pete Davidson's father, a firefighter, was among those who perished in the tragedy.

One such story revealed how close pop icon Michael Jackson came to being caught up in the chaos. The singer, who passed away on June 25, 2009, had a meeting scheduled in the Twin Towers on the morning they were targeted.

However, the Billie Jean singer overslept and missed his meeting in the building.

He had departed from his Neverland Ranch for New York to star in his 30th Anniversary Solo All Star show on September 7 and September 10 at Madison Square Garden. The shows boasted a lineup of A-list celebrities, including Whitney Houston, Liza Minnelli, and Gloria Estefan.

Notable figures like Elizabeth Taylor and Macaulay Culkin were also spotted in the Royal viewing box by the stage.

Just hours after the conclusion of the second concert, the World Trade Centre was attacked. Michael's brother, Jermaine Jackson, revealed what led to Michael missing his scheduled meeting - a twist of fate that may have saved his life. In his autobiography, Jermaine detailed how his late brother had stayed up late into the night before, conversing with their mother, Katherine, and sister, Rebbie.

"Thankfully, none of us had any idea that Michael was supposed to be at a meeting that morning at the top of one of the Twin Towers," Jermaine wrote in his book titled You Are Not Alone: Michael: Through a Brother's Eyes. "We only found out about this when Mother called his hotel to check if he was alright. She, Rebbie [Jackson], and a few others had left him there around 3am."

"'Mother, I'm okay, thanks to you. You kept me up talking so late that I overslept and missed my appointment,'" Michael is reported to have told his mother."

He wasn't the only star to narrowly escape disaster that day, as Mark Wahlberg was also slated to be on one of the planes that crashed into the New York skyscrapers. However, he altered his plans at the eleventh hour.
