Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase made headlines on Wednesday, September 11, with a massive financial decision regarding a potential contract extension that has fans scratching their heads.

Since being drafted by the Bengals in 2021 with the fifth overall pick, Chase has been a game-changer. He has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first three seasons, and his connection with quarterback Joe Burrow, a former college teammate, has been electric.

In his rookie year, Chase set a record for most receiving yards by a rookie with 1,455 yards and helped lead Cincinnati to Super Bowl LVI, where he had five catches for 89 yards in a close 23-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Chase’s success has led to his desire to be the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL. However, recent reports reveal that he turned down a $140 million contract from the Bengals, leaving fans shocked.

"The two sides were close to an agreement, league sources say," reported Sports Illustrated's James Rapien . "In fact, the Bengals offered Chase a four-year, $140 million contract with $90 million guaranteed, including a $30 million signing bonus."

    Fans reacted with disbelief.

“This kid is hilarious,” one fan commented.

“Got to get it done when you’re that close,” said another.

“We’ve reached insane money levels in the NFL,” added a third.

Chase’s rejection of the deal, which would have matched Justin Jefferson’s total value and annual average of $35 million per year, reportedly stems from disagreements over the timing of guaranteed money and injury protections.

While the Bengals wanted the bulk of guarantees to kick in by 2027, Chase and his camp pushed for earlier protection in case of injury.

As negotiations continue, fans remain stunned by the decision.
