Daniel Jones unfazed by heckling fans after Giants loss: 'I understand how it works'

Daniel Jones spoke with reporters on Wednesday as the Giants look to turn the page to Week 2 and the Commanders, but first, he was asked about being heckled by his own fans as he left MetLife Stadium following Sunday’s blowout loss.

In a viral video, Jones made his way out of the building long after New York’s 28-6 loss to the Vikings went final, and was taunted about his contract by several fans waiting for the quarterback to make his exit. The video led to a heated debate about crossing the line of booing during games and waiting after games to continue, but Jones insisted that he isn’t bothered by what happened on Sunday afternoon.

“Fans, they’re upset and frustrated. We’re frustrated too. I understand that,” Jones said. “I’m not easily offended. I understand how it works. I know I have to play better, and we all have to play better.”

Jones’ disastrous performance in his return from ACL surgery led to plenty of trolling beyond the fans in attendance at MetLife, as some players have even joked about Jones’ struggles on social media, but again, Jones insists that he is focused on the next game and nothing else.

“I’ve said a number of times, I’m concerned about the people in this building,” Jones said. “I think I have plenty of help, plenty of good coaching and teammates to work with here. That’s what I’m focused on...in terms of other people and what they have to say and think from their perspective...it’s really not very important to me.”

If Jones is indeed that skilled at blocking out the outside noise, it likely has come from plenty of practice, as he has been arguably the biggest topic of debate surrounding the Giants since the new regime of Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll arrived and weighed whether or not to pick up Jones’ fifth-year option. Then, many debated his $160 million contract, then wondered if the Giants should draft a quarterback to replace him a year later. There has been plenty of noise surrounding Jones, and he will continue to handle it the way he has since he was drafted, and doesn’t worry about the outside voices getting into his head.

“I feel like I’ve been doubted plenty for a long time,” Jones said. “I’ve dealt with it time and time and again and done a good job with it. I think my mental toughness is in a good spot. I’m not concerned about that.”
