Bill Belichick may be a media maven now , but one of his ex-players is already floating his next head coaching destination.

While appearing on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” on Tuesday, former Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman said one job in particular sticks out as a potential fit for the eight-time Super Bowl champion.

“The real enticing one, to me, is if the New York Giants open up,” Edelman said. “And I am not calling for anyone’s job. I love [Brian] Daboll. Daboll is my favorite. But the fate of what they’ve put on the field… You’re going to go down with that ship.”

It may be hard to imagine him as the leader on the sideline for the Giants after his Patriots fell to the Eli Manning-led Big Blue in the 2008 and 2012 Super Bowls, but the franchise’s rich history — he famously began his road to coaching greatness as the defensive coordinator on Bill Parcells’ Giants teams from 1985-89 — entices Belichick, according to Edelman.

“If that opens up, I remember vividly any time we played in New York or we played the Giants, you could just see a little jingle in Belichick’s spirit because he loved talking about those old Giants teams,” he said. “And he loved talking about that organization. You could tell that he loved the New York Football Giants. He just loves the Giants. So, I think, that would probably be the place he would want to go to.”

After a disastrous Week 1 loss to the Vikings, Daboll’s seat is thought to be getting warmer as the Giants flirt with becoming one of the NFL’s worst teams .

The Giants are also coming off a disappointing 2023 season, so if there’s no improvement before the end of the year, there could be an opening in the Meadowlands.

The 2024 NFL season is Belichick’s first without a head coaching job since 1999 after parting ways with the Patriots after last season, but he’s not expected to be off the field for long.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported last weekend that Belichick “still would like to return to coaching in 2025,” although he “is expected to be choosy if and when he returns to the sideline.”

Even without a coaching position, football fans will likely see more of Belichick than ever this season.
