“Grieving the loss of a loved one is a deeply personal and emotional experience,” the message began. “During this time, as we are navigating feelings of sorrow, reflection, and remembrance we kindly ask for privacy and understanding, allowing us the space to grieve in our own way. This period for is one of healing, and your respect for our need for solitude is appreciated as we honor the memory of our beloved Howard Stanley Beverly known to the world as Frankie Beverly.”

Beverly’s family added, “He lived his life with pure soul as one would say, and for us, no one did it better. He lived for his music, family and friends. Love one another as he would want that for us all.” No cause of death has been announced.

    About Maze’s History

Known for his soulful baritone voice, Beverly formed Maze in Philadelphia under the name Raw Soul. After relocating to San Francisco, Frankie changed the band’s moniker to Maze at the suggestion of Motown legend Marvin Gaye. From 1977 through 1993, Maze released eight studio albums, seven of which were certified gold by the RIAA for sales of more than 500,000 copies. The group’s 1981 concert album Live in New Orleans also received gold certification.

During that same time period, Maze scored more than 20 Top-40 hits on the Billboard R&B singles chart. Among them were the R&B chart-toppers “Back in Stride” (1985) and “Can’t Get Over You” (1989). In addition, Maze’s 1981 hit “Before I Let Go” was covered by Beyonce for her 2019 film, Homecoming.

Beverly toured with Maze until this year, when he wrapped up a farewell trek with the group in August. Maze is planning to continue touring with a new lead singer, Tony Lindsay.

    Patti LaBelle Pays Tribute

Fellow R&B legend Patti LaBelle paid homage to Beverly in a message posted on her socials.

“I love you Frankie!” she wrote. “Thank you for always lifting us higher! Rest in love and peace.” LaBelle also posted a video from a recent show where Beverly was in attendance. In the clip, Patti calls Frankie to come to the stage, where the two singers share a heartfelt embrace.
