After the pop icon endorsed Harris after her debate with Trump, both Republicans brushed off her public support of the vice president in the 2024 contest. Her announcement, which she posted to Instagram around 11 p.m. on Tuesday night, garnered 9.3 million likes since she posted it.
"We admire Taylor Swift's music, but I don't think most Americans, whether they like her music, are fans of hers or not, are going to be influenced by a billionaire celebrity who I think is fundamentally disconnected from the interests and the problems of most Americans,” Vance said in an interview Wednesday with Fox’ Martha MacCallum, when asked how to get his message to women who care about what Taylor Swift thinks.
Vance added: “When grocery prices go up 20 percent, it hurts most Americans, it doesn't hurt Taylor Swift. When housing prices become unaffordable it doesn’t affect Taylor Swift or any other billionaire. It does affect middle class Americans all over our country.”
Vance said that will be their pitch to women, focusing their message on a better economy and safer streets.
But Trump took a different stance on the endorsement: he said he liked “Mrs. Mahomes much better” than Swift, in reference to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ wife Brittany. Swift is in a relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and she regularly sits with Brittany Mahomes during Chiefs games.
The former president praised Brittany Mahomes for being “a big MAGA fan” and that Swift “couldn't possibly endorse Biden.”
“I was not a Taylor Swift fan, it was just a question of time,” Trump said in an interview with "Fox & Friends" on Wednesday morning. “She's a very liberal person, she seems to always endorse a Democrat and she’ll probably pay a price for it in the marketplace.”
In her endorsement, Swift specifically pointed to fake, AI generated images of herself endorsing Trump — that were shared by the former president on his social media site Truth Social — as a reason for needing to be “very transparent” about her voting plans.
Swift, arguably one of the biggest celebrities in the world right now, signed off her endorsement as a “Childless Cat Lady” — a reference to comments Vance made criticizing “childless cat ladies” in an old, resurfaced interview. The senator has said that his comments were sarcastic.
Harris meanwhile has already jumped onto the endorsement: she walked out to Swift’s song “The Man” after the debate last night, a song about women facing double standards in their careers. They are also selling Harris Walz friendship bracelets — an iconic symbol of Swift’s sold out Eras Tour — on the campaign website.
