Florida Atlantic is facing challenges this season with a current record of 0-2. In their opening game against Michigan State, they put up a competitive fight but ultimately fell short, losing 16-10.

In their subsequent matchup with Army, Florida Atlantic managed only seven points and suffered a 17-point defeat on their home turf.

FIU, on the other hand, experienced a heavy loss to Indiana, 31-7, in their opener. However, they made a significant comeback in their following game.

Against Central Michigan, FIU claimed a commanding 52-16 win. A decisive 21-point rally in the second quarter paved the way for their triumph.

Florida International Versus Florida Atlantic History

This marks the 21st time both teams will face each other in football. The Owls lead 16-4 all-time in the Shula Bowl, not having lost since 2016.

    Betting Odds

The Owls are the current favorites going against the Panthers. As of Thursday, Aug. 29, FanDuel has the following betting lines.

    Spread: Florida Atlantic -5.5 (-110); Army +5.5 (-110)

    Over/Under: Over 43.5 (-115), Under 43.5 (-105)

    Florida Atlantic Notables

FAU's offense has struggled through the first two games, particularly in the run game and finding a rhythm in the passing attack. Quarterback Cam Fancher has had difficulties with consistency, completing only 59% of his passes with three interceptions.

The lack of a productive run game, with CJ Campbell and Zuberi Mobley combining for just 93 yards over two games, has left the offense without explosive plays. Improving the offensive line's run blocking and developing better connections with receivers, especially Omari Hayes, will be critical against FIU.

FAU's defense faced setbacks in Week 2, giving up over 400 rushing yards to Army's run-heavy offense. While freshman CJ Heard was a bright spot with seven tackles, the defense's lapses in coverage have resulted in big plays.

Against FIU, the Owls' secondary, led by Kahzir "Buggs" Brown and Daedae Hill, will aim to rebound and demonstrate their ability to lock down a more traditional passing attack.

The Shula Bowl presents a vital opportunity for FAU to get back on track and build momentum. A win against their rival FIU would help stabilize their season, protect their home field, and create a positive foundation for the Tom Herman era.

    Florida Atlantic Player to Watch

Zuberi Mobley, who has been right behind CJ Campbell in carries through the first two games, may see an increased role against FIU.

Although Mobley only received four touches in Week 2, the need for a stronger running game could lead to FAU relying on him more if Campbell struggles early on. Mobley offers a bruising style that could help ignite the offense and provide a much-needed spark.

FAU's offensive success against FIU hinges on establishing a consistent ground game. If Campbell, the lead back, is unable to generate yardage early, Mobley's past experience and physical running style could be key.

With his ability to break tackles and gain tough yards, Mobley could help FAU control the tempo and keep the offense on schedule, which is crucial for finding rhythm and building momentum.

    Florida International Notables

FIU enters the Shula Bowl with significant momentum after a dominant 52-16 win over Central Michigan. The Panthers showcased a balanced offensive attack, scoring four rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns, while involving five different receivers.

Quarterback Keyone Jenkins has been efficient, completing 63% of his passes with three touchdowns and one interception, and has the ability to scramble if needed.

FIU's defense has been strong against the pass, forcing five interceptions against Central Michigan and limiting Indiana's passing attack in Week 1. However, their run defense has shown vulnerability, conceding 234 rushing yards to Indiana and 179 to Central Michigan. Improving the run defense will be a key to success against FAU's offense.

The Panthers feature a well-rounded team with a veteran quarterback, dual-threat running backs Kejon Owens and Shomari Lawrence, and playmakers at wide receiver, including Josiah Miamen. This balance on both sides of the ball positions FIU as a formidable opponent against FAU.

    Florida International Player to Watch

Keyone Jenkins brings a dynamic dual-threat capability to FIU's offense. Though his rushing has been limited this season, Jenkins is a significant threat on the ground.

FAU will need to be wary of his scrambling ability, especially since Jenkins presents a challenge similar to the one Aidan Chiles posed in Week 1. Containing his mobility will be key for the Owls' defense.

Jenkins has shown noticeable improvement as a passer in his second year as FIU's starting quarterback. After a rough 2023 season with 11 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and under 60% completion, Jenkins has elevated his accuracy to over 60% through two games this year with just one interception.

If he can effectively blend his passing efficiency with his running threat, Jenkins could prove difficult for FAU to stop.
