Nowadays, more and more women are looking for natural ways to address their health concerns . Fearing that they can throw their pH balance off or hormones out of wack when exposed to harmful chemicals, healthier alternatives have steadily grown in popularity.

Boric acid is a natural remedy that has been used for centuries to treat vaginal issues , but is it truly effective? Do the side effects outweigh the pros? Here’s what you need to know.

    What Is Boric Acid?

Boric acid is a naturally occurring chemical that’s commonly found in household cleaners, skin lotions and laundry stain removers. Its antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties have made it a popular over-the-counter choice for a wide variety of uses. From insecticide to eye wash solutions, boric acid’s most popular use is as a home remedy to help treat vaginal infections. Boric acid also contains probiotics and vitamins C and E, which altogether aid in restoring normal vaginal acidity and vaginal flora balance.

Is Boric Acid Safe For Vaginas?

Overall, boric acid is a safe treatment for your vagina. Studies show that boric acid suppositories can offer relief for recurring vaginal yeast infections when used alongside a prescription antifungal. However, it’s recommended to avoid use when you’re experiencing itchiness, as it can worsen skin irritation. Other potential side effects include redness, watery discharge and a mild burning sensation.

It’s also recommended to avoid using boric acid if you have any of the following:

    • Soreness or tenderness in your pelvic region
    • High blood pressure
    • Inflammatory diseases of the abdomen or pelvis
    • Vaginal bleeding
    • Signs of an STD or STI
    • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
    • Fever or chills
    • Vascular disease

Though more research is needed, boric acid may also be a useful add-on treatment for bacterial vaginosis. This is because it has been shown to remove bacterial mucus from the vagina, getting rid of disease-causing organisms.

Boric acid is toxic when swallowed, so it’s important to only use it in the form of a suppository or gelatin capsule inserted into the vagina. Here’s a guide on how to insert one:

    1. Wash and dry your hands.
    2. Lie on your back with bent knees, or stand with your knees bent.
    3. Gently insert one capsule as far as it will comfortably go into your vagina. You can use your fingers or a provided applicator.
    4. Dispose of the applicator if used.
    5. It’s recommended to wear a panty liner to absorb any discharge.
    6. Wash your hands thoroughly.
