Bucs add another key starter to latest injury report as they get ready to play the Lions in Week 2

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are beat up all over the defensive side of the ball. Only the linebacker position remains unscathed.

The defensive line and the entire secondary, both cornerback and safety, all have major injuries heading into the Week 2 matchup against the Detroit Lions. That's obviously not ideal when playing an offense like the one Jared Goff and co. possess.

At least the offense is in good shape? Well, not entirely after Wednesday's injury report.

Up-and-coming right tackle Luke Goedeke popped up on the report as a limited participant due to a concussion he suffered during the season-opener against the Washington Commanders. There weren't any reports of a concussion, beforehand, so it's unclear when it happened. That's a big deal, considering how well both Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport played against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Night Football. Also, the drop-off from Goedeke to backup Justin Skule is pretty steep, with all due respect.

We'll see how the rest of the week plays out, but this is obviously something that will be monitored closely.

As for the other additions, Will Gholston is dealing with an elbow issue and K.J. Britt is dealing with an illness. The fact both those guys, along with Zyon McCollum and Logan Hall, got in limited sessions is a good trend for their Sunday availability, although it's not guaranteed.

As for Josh Hayes' ankle injury, it sounds like the x-rays came back fine, because Bucs head coach Todd Bowles described the prognosis as "sore" when spoke with reporters on Wednesday. Antoine Winfield Jr. is expected to miss 2-4 weeks and it remains to be seen when Calijah Kancey can play.

The Lions have a few key injuries of their own

Star right tackle Penei Sewell is the biggest name on the list, as he injured his ankle during the Rams matchup, but played through it. That tells me the Lions are simply resting the veteran in order to give him as much time to heal up before the game. I know it's early, but I'd expect him to play on Sunday.

The two names to watch are safety Kerby Joseph and Marcus Davenport. Both players are starters on the Lions defense and both played very well in the season-opener.

As for DJ Reader, this should be his Lions debut, barring any setbacks.

"Yeah, I mean, I think the plan was, ultimately, if we couldn’t get DJ up last week... Tampa was always the target," Lions head coach Dan Campbell told reporters Monday. "So, providing there’s no setbacks, we’d like to get him going this week. He looked pretty good in practice."

Hopefully both sides can heal up, because this is an even more fascinating matchup when the rosters are mostly healthy.
