In search of depth for their defensive backfield, the Pittsburgh Steelers elected to sign safety Terrell Edmunds. The former Virgina Tech Hokie was the Steelers first-round pick back in 2018.

He was a starter for most of his first five years with the Steelers before leaving in free agency before last season. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles before being traded to the Tennessee Titans midway through the season.

He was released on cut down day, but was then signed to the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad before being signed by the Steelers to return to Pittsburgh.

In speaking with the media, coach Mike Tomlin explained why Edmunds was the logical choice.

"It's a guy that knows us. A guy that we know,” Tomlin said. “During the course of this thing, particularly at this stage of the journey, you can't have enough of those scenarios. Might not be a significant need right now, but that might be a different scenario a few weeks from now.

“And that's really in the same spirit that we did business with Cam Sutton, if you will. We got guys that we know fit, that understand this environment, that we know are capable of helping us."

The Steelers defense stifled the Atlanta Falcons offense in Week 1. The players they are adding can only make this team better. Edmunds is just 27 and in the prime of his career.

The Steelers have always been a defense-first franchise. This addition only benefits Pittsburgh in the long run.

Pittsburgh will head to Denver to take on the Broncos this Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET.
