Magic Johnson stunned the world by announcing he was HIV-positive in 1991. As expected, the Los Angeles Lakers superstar's shocking revelation garnered mixed reactions from the public.

Some viewed Johnson as a prime example of the consequences of indulging in a lavish and unhealthy lifestyle. However, Hollywood star and Magic's friend Louis Gossett Jr. believed God chose Johnson to emerge as an unexpected yet influential figure in raising awareness about HIV when humanity was grappling with the deadly disease.

"Magic is a young, in-shape, major athlete -- and he's only the tip of the iceberg. ... It's the natural thing, for young jocks of all colors to womanize," the Oscar winner told The Washington Post in '91.

"But if you look at the Higher Power, you think that God may have said, 'We have a problem here with morals. It's time to get a little more serious.'... Magic serves a great purpose. ... He will teach some to say, 'If you have to, use a rubber,'" he added.

Magic felt the same way, too

Magic was still at the peak of his illustrious NBA career when HIV hit him. This was a very difficult time for basketball enthusiasts and avid Johnson fans. Former Lakers athletic trainer Gary Vitti was even scared about the worst-case scenario.

However, that was never the case for Magic. Instead of fearing for his life, Johnson echoed Gosset Jr.'s take on his situation. According to the legendary point guard, God used him as an instrument to effectively defy those infamous fears associated with HIV and promote safe practices.

"I was scared; he wasn't," Vitti said . "He was tough. I said to him, 'Earv, I'm having a really, really tough time with this.'He looked me straight in the eye and said, 'Look, when God gave me this disease, he gave it to the right person. I'm going to do something with this.'"

    An icon of resilience

Magic became an advocate for HIV and AIDS education and prevention in the years following his announcement. Looking back, it was a pivotal moment in the fight against the epidemic as it encouraged helpful conversations that were previously avoided due to fear and misinformation.

In conclusion, Johnson's HIV story transformed public perception and discourse surrounding the virus, challenging stereotypes, reducing stigma, and fostering understanding. Moreover, the fact that Magic miraculously survived the disease also made him an icon of resilience.
