Jerry Reinsdorf’s Empty Rhetoric, Promises, and Legacy of Failure Define a White Sox Franchise in Freefall

A little over a year has passed since Jerry Reinsdorf last spoke to the press. In that news conference, he addressed the Chicago White Sox' 101-loss season, which led to the firings of his longtime executives Rick Hahn and Kenny Williams. The Chairman pontificated about what he described as a disgusting season, the difficult decision to fire his leaders, and what he owed to the fans.

He supposedly owed a quick turnaround of the team's fortunes, even invoking legendary baseball executive Branch Rickey. Rickey couldn't turn the tide for the White Sox because, in Reinsdorf's estimation, it would take him a year to learn the organization.

Luckily, he wouldn't need a Hall of Fame talent for his new baseball leader because Rickey had been dead for 58 years, and he already had Chris Getz.

Chris Getz. The only man in all of Major League Baseball who wouldn't need a year to learn the White Sox organization because he already knew it so well. No search for a general manager required. Crisis averted.

    Mission Accomplished, Jerry!

Well, fast-forward to Sept. 11, 2024, and Jerry Reinsdorf has issued a statement. His Chicago White Sox lost their 15th consecutive home game and will assuredly break the record for most losses in a season. His Chicago White Sox will be the worst baseball team in history .

Chicago's two-team owner complimented the players and staff for their hard work and professional attitude while expressing his and everyone else's unhappiness about the results. The statement ended with his parting words about having even words to say about the team at the season's end.

Jerry Reinsdorf's statement follows suit with the tone-deafness fans have continually experienced from this organization, from the days of Kenny Williams attendance-shaming fans to Chris Getz shrugging off a historically bad season on Tuesday, literally yesterday.

The Reinsdorf way is detached from the reality of modern baseball; it is feckless and loyal to everyone except the fans.

Whatever words, excluding "selling" and "firing," he utters after the season will follow suit. There is no substance, just more lip service.

Passion. Pride. Tradition. Most losses ever.
