The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Area Forecast Discussion, warning of increased winds and potential fire risks as a cold front moves into Northern California. The upper-level trough will bring gusty winds and cooler temperatures throughout the region, impacting the Bay Area and beyond.

Starting Wednesday afternoon, widespread wind gusts of 30 mph are expected, with some areas such as San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and the Salinas Valley likely experiencing gusts exceeding 45 mph. The strong winds will continue into Thursday.

Although temperatures will remain relatively mild and seasonal, the dry conditions and critically dry fuels pose a significant fire risk. Despite lower temperatures and increased relative humidity, any fires that ignite could spread rapidly due to the strong winds, making fire prevention crucial.

Winds are expected to decrease by Thursday night as the upper-level trough moves east and is replaced by a weak ridge of high pressure. However, Napa and Sonoma counties may experience northerly, offshore winds during the nighttime and morning hours before the sea breeze returns in the afternoon.
