Edgar Berlanga Unfazed by Canelo’s Power Ahead of Showdown

Before facing Canelo Alvarez, Edgar Berlanga expresses no concern about the Mexican fighter’s power, stating that he is well-prepared for the match. Ahead of the main event this Saturday, he says that no matter what Canelo will offer him, he will be ready for it, claiming to have sparred with some of the biggest heavyweight fighters.

Current unified super middleweight Canelo Alvarez, with a record of 61-2-2 with 39 knockouts, has bet on a knockout already in the eighth round of the fight against him. This will be a fight-of-the-year candidate as Canelo seeks an early stoppage at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on September 14th. However, he poses a tough test due to his power and durability.

Canelo’s Recent Fights Show Fading Endurance

Another element that will be decisive in the next fight is Canelo Alvarez’s ability to run out of steam in the second half of the fight. In the last five fights against Jaime Munguia, Jermell Charlo, John Ryder, Gennady Golovkin, and Dmitry Bivol, Canelo has had some issues in the later rounds. His endurance problem was clearly shown through his having very little energy left in the last four to six rounds of those fights.

In their third fight in September 2022, Golovkin had the tools to punish Canelo but decided to box rather than press for the stoppage decision, allowing Canelo to emerge as the winner. Edgar Berlanga, however, is not planning on boxing safely; He knows that to win the fight, he has to knock out his opponent, and that is why he is not leaving anything to the decision of the referees.

So, as the fully aware 22-0 (17 KOs) Edgar Berlanga once again finds himself in a position where if the fight goes the distance, he won’t be getting the nod on the judges’ scorecards. He understands that he must stay vigilant and seize any good openings to knock his adversary down, keeping his eyes wide open throughout the fight to avoid being caught off guard. His mindset is simple: He won’t be trying to outbox Canelo; instead, he’ll be focused on delivering a knockout.

Edgar Berlanga said in an interview with DAZN’s Chris Mannix that focused on the need for an athlete to be ‘alert’ during the fight. He admitted that at this weight class of 168 to 175 lbs, anyone can deliver a good punch, and it is those mysterious punches often thrown that cause the knockdown.

He also pointed out that he has sparred with stronger punchers, specifically Roamer Alexis Angulo and Steve Rolls, not to mention Santiago Espinal’s powerful shots he received. In those battles, he took yearly powerful punches that would have knocked out any other boxer in the 168-pound super-middleweight division; he outlasted them because he expected the impact, having seen them coming. Berlanga is on record stating that both Angulo and Rolls punched as hard, if not harder than Canelo; knowledge of that has provided him with the belief heading into the fight.
