SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 11, 2024 — Legendary music entertainer Linda Ronstadt has publicly condemned former President Donald Trump ahead of his planned rally in her hometown of Tucson, Arizona. In a strongly worded statement posted on Instagram, Ronstadt criticized Trump's record on immigration, his treatment of migrant families, and his broader political agenda, which she described as hateful and toxic.

    Ronstadt's Deep Ties to Tucson

Linda Ronstadt, a celebrated singer with a career spanning over five decades, was born and raised in Tucson, a city she often references with pride for its Mexican-American heritage and inclusive spirit. Trump’s rally, scheduled for Thursday in a hall named after Ronstadt, sparked the artist’s public denunciation.

"It saddens me to see the former President bring his hate show to Tucson, a town with deep Mexican-American roots and a joyful, tolerant spirit," Ronstadt wrote. She expressed her dismay not only with Trump's planned appearance but also with his overall political stance and actions, which she called a betrayal of the values that Tucson embodies.

Strong Criticism of Trump's Immigration Policies

Ronstadt did not mince words in her critique of Trump's immigration policies, specifically targeting the former President’s approach to migrant families at the U.S.-Mexico border. She highlighted the controversial family separation policy that was implemented during Trump's administration, which led to thousands of children being separated from their parents as they sought asylum.

"In Nogales and across the southern border, the Trump Administration systematically ripped apart migrant families seeking asylum," Ronstadt stated. She cited a report from Physicians for Human Rights that described the family separation policy as meeting the criteria for torture.

Ronstadt emphasized the lasting damage of these actions, stating, "There is no forgiving or forgetting the heartbreak he caused." Her comments reflect the enduring pain and controversy surrounding the policy, which remains a highly contentious issue in American politics.

    Ronstadt's Broader Critique of Trump

Beyond immigration, Ronstadt condemned Trump's rhetoric and policies towards women, immigrants, and people of color, accusing him of promoting hatred and division. "I don’t just deplore his toxic politics, his hatred of women, immigrants and people of color, his criminality, dishonesty, and ignorance," she wrote.

Her statement also drew a personal line between Trump's controversial remarks about Mexican immigrants and her own heritage. Ronstadt, who has Mexican roots, took particular offense to Trump’s infamous 2015 comments when he described Mexican immigrants as "rapists" and criminals. "Trump first ran for President warning about rapists coming in from Mexico. I’m worried about keeping the rapist out of the White House," she remarked, alluding to her concerns about a potential Trump return to power.

Personal Note to J.D. Vance and 2024 Endorsement

In a postscript directed at Senator J.D. Vance, Ronstadt responded to Vance’s recent remarks about unmarried women and childless individuals. The Ohio Senator, known for his conservative stance, has previously criticized what he views as societal decay stemming from changing family structures.

Ronstadt, who raised two adopted children as a single mother, addressed Vance's comments with a pointed response: "I raised two adopted children in Tucson as a single mom. They are both grown and living in their own houses. I live with a cat. Am I half a childless cat lady because I’m unmarried and didn’t give birth to my kids?" Her remarks challenge the stigmatization of non-traditional families and affirm her pride in her personal life choices.

Ronstadt ended her statement by announcing her support for Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz in the upcoming presidential election, writing, "Call me what you want, but this cat lady will be voting proudly in November for @kamalaharris and @timwalz."

Trump's Rally Amidst Rising Political Tensions

Trump's rally in Tucson comes amid a highly polarized political climate as he continues his campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. His visits to key battleground states, including Arizona, are part of his broader strategy to galvanize his base, despite ongoing legal challenges and criticisms from public figures like Ronstadt.

As Ronstadt’s statement gains traction on social media, it underscores the deep divisions in American society and the continued impact of Trump's policies on public discourse. Her outspoken condemnation reflects a broader discontent among critics who view Trump's political resurgence as a threat to the progress and values they champion.

Ronstadt's voice, amplified by her celebrity and personal connection to Tucson, adds to the chorus of those opposing Trump’s return to the national stage. Her message is clear: the legacy of Trump's actions, especially on immigration, remains a powerful and painful issue that continues to resonate with many Americans.
