Dallas to lower speed limit on Loop 12, Central Expressway in South Dallas

Dallas City Council members voted Wednesday to lower speed limits on several sections of Loop 12, also known as Ledbetter Boulevard, Great Trinity Way, and Buckner Boulevard, in southern Dallas.

Additionally, they approved reducing the speed limit on a hazardous stretch of U.S. 75—Central Expressway—north of downtown Dallas.

On Loop 12, some speed limits will be decreased from 45 to 40 miles per hour, particularly on a short, approximately one-mile segment of Ledbetter near Bonnie View/Sunnyvale Road. This area has seen a tragic increase in pedestrian fatalities, with six people struck and killed in just 17 months.

A review of Texas Department of Transportation crash data reveals a disturbing trend: 15 fatal accidents have occurred on Loop 12 in the first eight months of 2024 alone.
