Max Johnson's season came to an abrupt end before it truly started due to a leg break in North Carolina's opening game.

Johnson sustained the injury near the third quarter's conclusion in UNC's inaugural contest against Minnesota. This occurred after he secured the starting position over Connor Harrell.

Following a tackle by two Golden Gophers defenders, the severity of the injury necessitated his removal from the field by cart, and a subsequent hospital examination in Minneapolis confirmed the leg fracture.

Prior to his departure from the game, Johnson had completed 12 out of 19 passes for 71 yards and one interception, and also achieved a 10-yard rushing touchdown.

According to his father's announcement this morning, Johnson's hospital stay has concluded.

Brad Johnson conveyed the news about the Tar Heel quarterback's condition via social media earlier today. Following a fortnight of post-operative rehabilitation, Johnson has now made his way back to Chapel Hill.

“14 days ago, our son @MaxJohnson14 had a serious injury in the Minnesota game. Thank You to Dr Templeman at HCMC Hospital, UNC staff, Coach Mack Brown and all who have helped along the way,” Johnson tweeted. “The Johnson Family made it back to Chapel Hill & look forward to recovery! #GoHeels“

Johnson underwent two surgical procedures on his leg, aligning with the projected recovery timeline for his return to campus.

He transferred to North Carolina this offseason after a four-year collegiate career in the Southeastern Conference, splitting his time between LSU and Texas A&M. He played in 30 games across both programs, starting in 22 of them.

Following the conclusion of this season, Johnson has declared his intention to return to North Carolina in 2025, having two years of eligibility remaining.

Despite the abrupt end to his fifth season, he has now returned to North Carolina, where he will commence his rehabilitation in anticipation of next fall.
