News broke on Thursday that NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban was stepping down — a new development in the multiple FBI corruption probes into the conduct of New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) and his inner circle.

New York’s ABC 7 reported that Caban was expected to formally announce his resignation by the end of the day; CBS New York also had the news, which included the detail that Caban’s twin brother James Caban was also allegedly involved as a “fixer” tasked with “smoothing things over between police and popular establishments around noise complaints and other violations.” James Caban is a club owner and former police officer.

    Here is ABC 7’s report:

This comes on the heels of a federal investigation that is playing out into possible dealings tied to Mayor Adams’s administration and key members of the administration. We know Commissioner Caban’s cell phone was recently seized as part of that probe. We also understand that the investigation is continuing and more details are yet to come. But the news that we’re hearing is that embattled commissioner for the NYPD Edward Caban, is expected to announce his resignation by the end of today. He was facing mounting criticism over potential handling of certain behind-the-scene deals, again tied to Mayor Adams’s administration, other officials also the focus of this investigation. Important to point out here, nobody has been charged at this point, but Commissioner Caban’s time as the top cop in the NYPD appears to be coming to an end, facing mounting pressure for his resignation that we expect to happen by the end of today.

Adams said on Tuesday that Caban “has not been accused of any wrongdoing. There has never been a comment from me that said any member of this administration is being pressured by me to resign.”

The FBI has been conducting four investigations into Adams and other members of his administration; a raid led last week by the agency seized cell phones from Caban, Adams’s schools chancellor, and two deputy mayors as well as advisers in the administration. This was unrelated to the case involving the Cabans and the police, but is related to alleged corruption and bribery occurring in the Mayor’s office.

Another investigation into Adams’s alleged quid pro quo dealings with Turkey. The New York Times wrote : “Federal prosecutors were also investigating whether the mayor pressured the Fire Department to sign off on the opening of a high-rise consulate building for the Turkish government and whether he accepted pricey airfare upgrades from Turkish Airlines, which is owned in part by the Turkish government.” Adams, his campaign, and City Hall were all subpoenaed to meet with federal prosecutors about the mayor’s foreign travel records and connections to the Turkish government.

Finally, the mayors special adviser and director of Asian affairs Winnie Greco was the subject of a recent raid at her home; Greco was a big fundraiser for Adams. NYT wrote that the aim of this investigation is “unclear,” but comes as other officials in the state have been outed for acting as foreign agents on behalf of China.
