Klay Thompson Watches Film of Mavs Greats to Prepare for Season

Klay Thompson has only been a member of the Dallas Mavericks for a little more than two months, but he's already making significant headway when it comes to becoming a fan favorite.

Shortly after Thompson left the Golden State Warriors to sign a three-year, $50 million contract with the Mavs in July, the next time he was seen getting a workout in, he was donning a retro Dirk Nowitzki jersey, which sent Mavs fans into a frenzy on social media.

Then, in his introductory press conference, Thompson spoke about how Mavs legend Jason Terry was part of his inspiration for choosing No. 31. He also detailed how he watched the Mavs in their NBA Finals loss to the Boston Celtics and saw ways he could help the team get over the hump during the 2024-25 season.

In addition to participating in recent open runs with a handful of his new Mavs teammates, Thompson has now given fans yet another reason to fall in love with him. On Wednesday night, Thompson posted a picture of him watching highlights from the Mavs' 2011 NBA Finals win over the LeBron James-led Miami Heat to his Instagram story with a "taking notes" emoji.

Now, the next step for Thompson is to build on his new Mavs fan-favorite status by producing on the court when the season begins next month. Being a 41.3-percent 3-point shooter for his career, Thompson should have no issues fitting in alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. The open shots will be there for the taking, and if Thompson makes a decent amount of them, the Mavs might get to feel something they haven't felt since 2011.
