Man dies a month after punched on Bronx sidewalk

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 58-year-old man died a month after he was brutally punched on a Bronx sidewalk, the NYPD announced Wednesday.

At about 5 p.m. on Aug. 4, Benjamin Bernal was struck in the head on W. Mosholu Parkway North near Jerome Avenue in Norwood.

The impact of the punch caused Bernal to fall to the sidewalk, and hit his head, losing consciousness, police said.

Bernal was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital after having suffered injuries to the back of his head and brain. He underwent surgery and died on Sept. 7, authorities said.

Police arrested Dequan Jackson, 29, the day of the attack and charged with assault and harassment.

The city's Medical Examiner has now deemed Bernal's death a homicide.

Jackson may face additional charges. He is due back in court Sept. 17.
