So not dope: Why you should never ever let your dog eat cannabis

Dogs are sensitive to many types of food, but that rarely keeps them from devouring it if you let them.

You may know by know to keep your chocolate away from your pet, but if you smoke cannabis or eat edibles at home, you should also make sure your dog can't get near it.

Dogs react very sensitively to the intoxicating active ingredient in cannabis, says Tina Hölscher, a vet with German animal rights campaign Aktion Tier.

Depending on the amount ingested, they will suffer from symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, increased salivation and gait disturbances.

In the worst case, the animals can fall into a coma. When intoxicated with drugs, your furry friend will be profoundly confused, which can result in psychological trauma. Even crumbs of weed that fall on the ground while rolling a joint can be dangerous when your dog assumes they're something tasty.

If you notice that your pet has consumed drugs you should consult a vet immediately, says Hölscher. They will be given an injection that causes the dog to vomit up everything that has been ingested in the previous one to two hours and saves them from a horrible trip.

Keep a close eye on breeds like Labradors which are known to devour anything they can get their paws on, says Hölscher. Some dogs are more careful though. You should also be mindful where you keep your drugs if you have rabbits, birds, hamsters, rats or other rodents.
