Cardinals new manager candidate could make team better for 2025

The St. Louis Cardinals are on the verge of potentially falling short of the postseason for the fifth time in the last nine years. If this comes to pass, we may see them make some changes for 2025, especially if the dynamic is shifting in the front office.

Should John Mozeliak step aside and let Chaim Bloom take over, Bloom would likely want to hire his own manager. This is where Miami Marlins skipper Skip Schumaker comes into play.

Mark Powell of FanSided recently listed him as a candidate to become the Cardinals next manager and stated that he would make the team better.

"Skip Schumaker makes the most sense as a plausible replacement for Marmol," Powell wrote. "The connection makes all the sense in the world, as Schumaker once played for St. Louis. He's also used to playing for a small-market team, so the resources at his disposal will be a welcome sign with the Cardinals."

The Marlins ultimately decided to decline Schumaker's club option for 2025, meaning he'll likely be on the move again. But after his playing days were finished, he served as the bench coach for the San Diego Padres and even spent a year under Marmol as the bench coach in 2022.

Though not a household name, Schumaker was a fan favorite in St. Louis, and he helped them win two World Series titles during his time there. He also was National League Manager of the Year in 2023 with the Marlins, so he is somebody that knows how to get the most out of his players.

He would indeed make the Cardinals better as they try to bounce back into contention in 2025. We'll see if he's on their radar this coming offseason.

Not sure he’d make the team better. A coach needs quality talent to succeed. Cards need someone with vision and the ability to assess talent.
