New York City has a new interim police commissioner . Mayor Eric Adams took the immediate action following the resignation of Edward Caban, naming Thomas Donlon the new interim police commissioner.

The shake-up in the department comes just days after federal agents seized the cellphones of several high-ranking officials in the Adams administration, including Donlon's.

In an email to the department on Thursday, Sept. 12, Caban said the ongoing developments made it impossible for him to fully focus on his duties. Caban's lawyers are expected to say that he is not a target of the investigation and will cooperate with authorities. At the center of the investigation is a nightclub business owned by Caban's brother, James, who also had his phone seized.

Caban's resignation marks the end of a 30-year career with the NYPD. He made history as the department's first Latino commissioner when he was appointed in July 2023.

As Donlon steps into this interim role, the city looks for stability during this critical time. Donlon served as the New York director of the Office of Homeland Security, and was a co-case agent in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing investigation, as well as handing numerous federal violations.
