A 4.7 magnitude earthquake centered in Malibu rattled Southern California Thursday morning.

Malibu Mayor Doug Stewart told L.A.’s Morning News he lives near the epicenter of the quake.

“And as soon as the earthquake alert went off I felt the jolt,” “ he said. “In fact, [I] dove underneath the kitchen table.”

The experience for the city’s residents, however, varied.

One man told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou he felt the quake before he got the alert on his phone.

“The house started to shake. I don't know if something was going on with the blind system but, no,” he said. “Sure enough it was an earthquake.”

Another man said he was in a confined space when the quake hit.

“I was just in the restroom, enjoying my quiet time,” he said. “We were shaking and moving like it was a party.”

One woman said the earthquake came as a reminder to get out of bed.

“It shook me up. It was pretty wild,” she said.

One man told Demetriou he didn’t feel it at all.

“We had an announcement at work and they let us know and I was getting off duty,” he said. “So I went home.”

Mayor Stewart said that as soon as the quake was over, the city’s public works department was activated.

City officials said there were no reports of damage, however, there were rocks in the roads on Malibu Canyon, Kanan, and other canyons
