BELLINGHAM, WASHINGTON - A 2-inch natural gas line was accidentally struck allegedly by a construction company working on the Meador Avenue bridge earlier today, causing a significant gas leak in the area. Cascade Natural Gas has responded to the scene and is currently working to mitigate the situation.

Residents and businesses in the vicinity have been advised to either evacuate or shelter in place as a precaution. According to the Bellingham Fire Department, it may take several hours to resolve the issue. In the meantime, a strong odor of natural gas is expected to persist in the area.

"We are asking everyone to avoid the area until further notice," the Bellingham Fire Department said in a statement. "Safety is our top priority, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available."

As the repair work continues, officials urge residents to stay informed through local news outlets and the Bellingham Fire Department’s social media channels for the latest updates on the situation.
