Although Lainey Wilson is now winning various accolades for her musical talents and just became a member of the Grand Ole Opry, she does not forget her humble beginnings. While on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Falon , she shared how she wrote her first song at 9 years old, and she used to perform anywhere her parents would let her.

    Lainey Wilson’s Humble Beginnings

While Lainey Wilson just won Entertainer of the Year , she didn’t start off that way. She shared that she used to perform in all sorts of odd locations, including the isles of Walmart. She told Jimmy, “I would play anywhere that they would let me play.” Wilson then went on to share some of the specific spots she would play her music. “I’m talking about nursing homes, flatbed trailers, anywhere like that.”

From there, Lainey Wilson shared how her parents were a big part of her being brave enough to share her music. She said, “My parents would be like, ‘Hey Lainey, sing that song you just wrote last week for anybody.” Lainey said she was “bit by the bug” after writing her first single.

Next, she told Jimmy Fallon that her humble upbringing had a lot to do with her desire to be an artist. She shared how her hometown was very small, a place where everyone knew everyone. She loved the stories that she grew up with, and she wanted to tell stories herself, and now she does through her music.

    A Star Is Born

Lainey Wilson continued with, “I wanted to make people feel something.” Jimmy Fallon then pulled out an image of one of Lainey’s first CDs. Lainey shares that her grandmother printed the photographs of her and put them on all of the covers. Then, Lainey went around and offered them to friends and family.

“I was handing them out like candy,” she joked to Fallon. “Nobody was buying them. I was trying to sell them, though.” From there, she gives fans a small taste of one of the verses from the song Country Girls Rule on that CD album from her beginnings.

The verse she shared had the following lyrics:

“We wear our jeans, just a little too tight.

Tank tops, spaghetti straps, looking just right.

Long hair, take a dare anywhere,

Country girls rule, Yea country girls rule.”

From there, she shares her favorite line from the song. She sings, “Pea-picking, finger-licking, butt-kicking.”

    Lainey Wilson Is Hannah Montana?

Another fun fact from Wilson’s life was revealed on The Tonight Show . Jimmy shared that he discovered Wilson was a Hannah Montana impersonator. Lainey laughed and explained, “A lot of the time, I would open the show as Lainey Wilson and then I would run behind a tree or whatever and put on my Hannah Montana get-up.”

The star performed like this from 8th grade to 12th grade, doing 3 to 4 birthday parties a weekend. It is incredible to see how far Lainey Wilson has come.
