Steelers 1st-team tackles in state of flux headed into Week 2

Dan Moore Jr. returned to Pittsburgh Steelers practice Wednesday, and Troy Fautanu confirmed he took reps as the first-team right tackle.

Broderick Jones took first-team reps, too, teammates confirmed.

Where does that leave the Steelers’ starting offensive line for Week 2 on Sunday in Denver?

“I have faith in the whole room, especially (Jones, Fautanu and Moore), whoever is at tackle, I have faith in them to do the job,” center Zach Frazier said. “We know they can all do it. They’re all starters.”

Indeed, Jones and Moore are returning starters, and Fautanu has the pedigree of being a first-round pick in addition to a resume of impressing in training camp before suffering a knee injury during the preseason opener Aug. 9.

Thirty days later, he was in uniform for the regular-season opener Sunday in Atlanta but as a backup (he did not play) in part because he hadn’t returned to full practice until last week.

It was Moore who began this week missing practice time because of injury. But after sitting out Wednesday, Moore (knee) was listed on the league-mandated official injury report as a full participant Thursday. First-team left guard Spencer Anderson — in because of Isaac Semumalo’s pectoral injury — said he took reps next to both Jones and Moore at tackle.

Moore exclusively plays left tackle. Jones took reps on both sides. Fautanu most often was regarded during the draft process as a right tackle, and he recently has said he feels more comfort there.

Regardless, Fautanu is no longer listed on the injury report. He appears in line to make his NFL debut Sunday against the Broncos.

“Nothing is really set in stone until Sunday,” he said, “but I am … very excited. It’s an opportunity. Hopefully, I am going to go out there and try to take advantage of it and never look back.”
