Ahead of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit 's new season, the show's leading lady, Mariska Hargitay , is making history with her character, Captain Olivia Benson .

Hargitay celebrated the exciting news that her wardrobe from the series is officially on display at the National Museum of American History in a video captioned: "From the 16th Precinct ➡️ @amhistorymuseum, @therealmariskahargitay displays Olivia Benson’s legendary uniform to celebrate the historic #SVU Season 25!"

Wearing a black shirt, long skirt and stylish black and white heels, Hargitay shined in footage from a special event recognizing the big honor.

In one clip, Hargitay spoke to an audience as she likely talked about the outfit, which was featured in the eighth episode of Law & Order: SVU Season 25 called "Third Man Syndrome."

The costume was donated to the American History Museum in Washington, D.C. "to celebrate the historic 25th season of SVU," as the video explained. In a separate post , the museum noted that Law & Order: SVU "is the longest-running primetime, live-action series in American history."

Fans were happy to celebrate with Hargitay, writing notes like, "Olivia Benson and Mariska Hargitay are national treasures! ❤️," and "I love her so much!! Literally an icon. I’m so proud of her, Olivia benson = mariska always.🤍🥹."

"Olivia Benson & Mariska Hargitay are the elites of our time that truly make HISTORY 🙏🏼❤️✨," said another.

At the costume donation ceremony , Hargitay shared a strong message about the impact of her character and the donation: "It is my profound hope that what is being enshrined here with this donation is the act of listening; the act of paying deep and purposeful attention to survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse."

She went on, ending with a message to survivors, saying, "We are listening and your stories matter in the full story of this country. We hear you, we believe you and your healing is our priority.”

Law & Order: SVU will return with Season 26 on Oct. 3.
