'I'm the Biggest Cowboys Hater!' Why Do Fans Fall for Stephen A.'s Act?

FRISCO — Few people publicly embrace a hatred of a professional sports team like media personality Stephen A. Smith with the Dallas Cowboys . Many have expressed their own disdain for "America's Team" but Smith takes those feelings to another level. ... or at least he labors furiously to create that impression.

Sometimes, those passions extend beyond the love for his own beloved sports teams.

In an interview with Front Office Sports shown on X , Smith appeared indecisive when asked to choose between his love for the New York Knicks or his hate of the Dallas Cowboys.

“It’s still a tough call because I can’t put into words the joy that I get from seeing Cowboys fans miserable,” Smith said. “I mean it really touches my heart. To just know that they’re crying, they’re upset."

"After all the misery they cause everybody else with their bravado … they're walking around Super Bowl champions – they ain’t won a Super Bowl in 29 years.”

Of course, Smith has an excellent way of enlivening such dramatics, though his focus always seems geared on the Cowboys fans rather than the team itself.

Its easy to take the easy shots at the blown postseason opportunities and the past years spent wandering in the doldrums of mediocrity. But its the aftermath of those failures that (he claims) rile him up.

The Cowboys' recent success has only exacerbated the antics of this character. Three consecutive 12-win seasons weighed down by trip-ups in the playoffs have just poured gasoline on that fire.

Oh, and when we say "character''? We mean it. Smith doesn't actual "hate'' Dallas. He's putting on a show, fully aware that any association with the Cowboys stuffs money into his pocket. It's good business ... though we wonder why, after all these years, some in Cowboys Nation still fall for his schtick.
