Erik Ten Hag Continues the Cristiano Ronaldo Feud

Erik ten Hag has sharply responded to recent criticisms from former Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo. CR7 had criticized Ten Hag for suggesting that Manchester United could not compete for the Premier League title and had made a harsh evaluation of the club’s current situation. In response, Ten Hag seemed to mock Ronaldo’s move to play in Saudi Arabia.

Erik ten Hag managed Ronaldo for less than four months during his first season at United. Their relationship was strained from the beginning, particularly when Ronaldo left a pre-season friendly against Rayo Vallecano at half-time, and further deteriorated when he refused to come off during a Premier League match against Tottenham in October 2022, resulting in a brief suspension.

While Ronaldo also expressed his belief that his former club couldn’t win the championship, he felt that Ten Hag, as manager, was conveying the wrong message. When asked about Ronaldo’s remarks before Saturday’s match at Southampton, Erik Ten Hag noted that Ronaldo had previously made similar statements.

Erik Ten Hag told a press conference: “He said that Manchester United can’t win the Premier League. He said this if you read the article very well. He’s far away in Saudi, far away from Manchester. Everyone can have an opinion. It’s okay. It doesn’t impact me, I know in the process where we are, where we’re going.”

Ronaldo departed United a month later following his notorious interview with Piers Morgan and subsequently joined Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League. Recently, Ronaldo has been in impressive form, scoring in his last four games for both club and country, including in Al-Nassr’s opening two league matches and Portugal’s UEFA Nations League victories over Croatia and Scotland.

What’s Next for Manchester United

After consecutive losses to Brighton and Liverpool, Manchester United face Southampton knowing that another defeat would mark their worst start to a season since 1986-87. Manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed that full-back Luke Shaw, who has yet to play for the club this season despite making three appearances for England in Euro 2024, remains unavailable.

Striker Rasmus Hojlund will also be sidelined as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury sustained during the summer tour of the United States. New signing Manuel Ugarte is fit to play, though the 50.2 million euros Uruguayan midfielder only returned from international duty on Thursday.

The two-week break since the Liverpool defeat has sparked extensive speculation about Ten Hag’s future. Many believe the 54-year-old may not last the entire season, especially with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe beginning to exert his influence. Erik Ten Hag, who also recently managed his former club FC Utrecht in a charity match, has stated that the external “noise” does not concern him.
