Bucks former lottery pick announces his retirement to focus on broadcasting

A talented big man has called it a career after playing nine seasons in the NBA.

The NBA can be a cruel place sometimes, especially for a league with talent incoming every year. For some players, their time in the league could be 15 years and for others, every day in the league could be their last. Nonetheless, when one door closes, another door opens , according to the most recent player to retire.

“I was so blessed to play this long," long-time Milwaukee Bucks big man John Henson told RG.com. "It's a lot of opportunities, man. It’s just a matter of one step at a time. I’m only 33, so I have time to explore and figure out what I want to do next. This is just the next phase, and we’ll see where it takes me. But so far so good. Year three out of the NBA, being able to do all these things [with] all these companies and have all this interest kinda drummed up, I’m thankful.”

Henson announced his retirement but he plans to stay around the game in some capacity. The former first-round pick has found a love for broadcasting and will continue to use his knowledge of the game following his NBA tenure.

The North Carolina product was selected 14th overall in 2012 by the Bucks where he spent the majority of his nine years in the league. At 6-foot-9, Henson made most of his impact on the defensive end, where he averaged 1.5 blocks with Milwaukee. However, Henson finished his career averaging 7.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists, showing flashes of his two-way ability.
